SquareMeal Review of Jamaica Patty Co

The brainchild of Jamaican-born entrepreneur Theresa Roberts and award-winning Caribbean chef Collin Brown, this bijou Covent Garden hangout naturally majors on all manner of freshly baked Jamaican patties – a West Indian take on the Cornish pasty with authentic fillings including richly spiced jerk chicken, curried goat and the classic combo of saltfish and ackee. Grab one to eat on the go, or pull up a chair in the smart little basement dining area. There's also a selection of traditional Caribbean-inspired soups ranging from spicy pumpkin to chicken and dumpling, as well as banana porridge for breakfast and moist Tortuga rum cake or banana bread for a sweet treat. To drink, check out the invigorating ‘soursop water’ (made from the graviola plant) or try something more conventional such as a cup of smooth Blue Mountain coffee.

The Jamaica Patty Company stands out for all the right reasons. Located in Covent Garden, and as one of few Jamaican eateries in the West End, this is the ‘go to’ place for something quick, tasty and wholesome. Recently opened in 2013, the simple name derives from a simple Jamaican concept in the form of good quality patties, with succulent fillings such as jerk chicken, spicy beef, ackee & saltfish and curried goat. The ‘no need to wait for an invite’ entrance, openly welcomes passersby, whilst the black and yellow décor exudes modernity and the flag colours poised creatively on the back wall, give it an authentic Jamaican feel. Allowing my eyes to wander up and down the menu, I couldn’t decide between a curried goat or ackee & saltfish patty. Eventually, I opted for my usual of curried coat, priced at £3.99. Fresh from under the heat, it was tasty to say the least. The yellow flaky pastry was soft with a delicate buttery taste, whilst the curried goat was well-seasoned with aromatic spices and a slight peppery taste which wasn’t overbearing and left a memorable taste in the mouth. The menu, prepared by renowned Jamaican chef Colin Brown, has recently been extended to include breakfasts such as banana porridge, banana bread & Blue Mountain Coffee, soups and their ‘Devon House I-Scream in various tropical flavours. Worthwhile visit especially if you’re passing………
