SquareMeal Review of Poulet Rouge

Dreamed up by the owners of the beefy Cattle Grid chain, this new family-friendly concept puts its money on freshly roasted chickens – dished up with a dash of Gallic flair. The ‘chooks’ in question are barn-reared, corn-fed Goosnargh birds, sourced from Reg Johnson’s renowned farm in the Ribble valley and served straight from the rotisserie with big helpings of chips – plus a punchy Poulet Rouge sauce for those who want to add an extra kick to their meal. There is also an assortment of Francophile salads, sides and desserts, with dauphinoise potatoes joining crêpes and galettes on the menu. To drink, expect grown-up, French-accented wines and own-label Poulet Rouge beer.

Excellent but slightly hidden!
Being regulars of Bucci, Gazette and Harrisons my wife and I eat out in Balham maybe two or three times a week. This time we wanted to try somewhere new, a quick google found Poulet Rouge, a mere two minute walk from our flat. The concept is similar to it's exceptional sibling restaurant; Cattle Grid (but with less moo and more cluck). A straight forward menu with interesting variety and a very nice price. Having had game chips as a starter, I had a half chicken with chicken jus and fries whilst my wife had the pumpkin soup (from the special's board) with sweet potato fries. The chicken was cooked to perfection with delicious crispy skin and juicy meat; it was clear this had been a happy bird (later corroborated with a visit to their website where we found out all birds are from the famous Swainson House Farm). The fries were Cattle Grid-esque, and the cajun sweet potato fries were some of the best we had ever tried (crispy and not soggy and despite the cajun seasoning retained the unique taste without being overloaded in fat or oil). My wife was very impressed with the pumpkin soup and we can only hope this wasn't just included to coincide with Halloween..! The service was prompt, friendly and personal; we were told of the breakfast Galletes and returned the following Saturday; despite being the only ones in the place at breakfast prime time, I was left feeling satisfied from a Gallette containing crispy bacon, perfectly scrambled eggs and smokey mushrooms. I would strongly recommend a visit; quality food with a personal service that I would consider to be on a par with some of Balham's other restaurants but at half the price. My only concern is that it is on the wrong side of Balham and not enough people know about this place. If management were to spread the word within South London, I would have no doubts this would be as full as Cattle Grid for evenings and as busy as places like Milk for breakfast!

Cool new find in Balham!
Stumbled across this last night and absolutely loved it! Poulet Rouge has a great vibe and really friendly staff. The restaurant has a really nice, relaxed French bistro style feel – designed with some cool touches such as the champagne rack counter fronts, which inspired us to have a bottle of the house champagne. Excellent value for money and the rest of the French wine list looked impressive, while still being very reasonably priced. Food did not disappoint on an any level. Chicken served with delicious jus. Sides all served up in cute little Le Creuset casserole dishes – we opted for cassoulet, celeriac remoulade and dauphinoise potatoes. Big enough for two to share so was great opportunity to sample a few. Didn't have any room for the dessert crepe menu, but will definitely save some room next time we visit. Will absolutely be back for more…

Disappointing
I visited on a Sunday and the place was dead. There wasn't even any background music. The chicken was stone cold so I had to ask for a replacement. The portions were disappointing – even the fries came in a small pot. The chicken was dry because the sundried tomato sauce was a paste rather than a sauce. The waiter messed up the bill and added a dessert that we did not order. The Poulet Rouge ale is very good though and the restaurant decor is quite quirky I really wanted to love this place since I live nearby, but I would sadly visit nando's any day over this place. Where the chicken is served hot and juicy with plenty of tasty sauces and good portions all for less money!

So glad I'm a local
Been here a few times since it opened – the chicken is really good, always order loads of sides too. Never order dessert but my girlfriend ordered one of the amaretto cheesecake crepes & I ate most of it. Cool space, like it a lot – will be in for Sunday lunch soon I'm sure. Really good value – I'm shocked every time I get the bill!

Nothing better than chicken...
I love this new chicken restaurant in Balham. The menu is simple but brilliant, I have sampled most of the food already and everything has been delicious. The ‘Goosnargh’ Chicken is probably the best chicken I have ever tasted, accompanied by a great selection of sides. The crepes are amazing too especially the Amaretto Cheesecake crepe…impossible to resist! Oh and the house white wine is really good. Everything is very reasonably priced too. I will be going again…and again.
