SquareMeal Review of Mari Vanna

Bronze Award

Kitsch almost to the point of parody, Mari Vanna's "absolutely fantastic" Imperial Russia-meets-Cath Kidson interiors have become a hallmark for this six-strong international group – and the Knightsbridge outlet is no exception. Marrying finely crafted painted furniture with glass chandeliers, heavy drapery, walls of black-and-white portraits and cabinet upon cabinet of Russian trinkets, it's quite an assault on the senses – although it clearly appeals to modern Russians hankering after a slice of the old motherland. Expect to see suited oligarchs scoffing beef stroganoff opposite wafer-thin spouses contemplating classic Olivier salads (sausage, pickled cucumber, peas and baked potato) with a glass of bubbles in hand. Elsewhere, big tables of ladies enjoy sharing platters of salted herring and cured pork, while first dates tuck in to bowls of borscht, mushroom dumplings and pork fritters. Service is as glamorous and patriotic as the setting.

The booking of the table was valid for 2 hours even though we ordered 2 bottles of vodka £120.00 each, they didn’t have and had to offer a replacement and the food wasn’t served on time. After 2 hours were were askerd to leave and paid almost £500 bill. I think the owners should stay there for 2 hours trying enjoing the food and the music and then deciding the length of the maximum stay. That’s not an eat as you like place. 1 star.

Frozen food and rude staff
I had dinner with my wife in this place. The starter was OK but the main was DISGUSTING. I ordered a chicken Kiev which is supposed to be one of the flagship dishes of the Russian cuisine. The chicken was undercooked ,dry and clearly cooked from frozen . We called the waiter to complain and he admitted himself that it was frozen. Instead of taking my complaint as constructive feedback and remove the chicken from the bill they took it as a personal offence saying that we must have sophisticated tastes!! For the quality of the food we got the very expensive bill and the rude staff we won't come back to this place.

Simply perfect, almost
Another great meal at Mari Vanna which excels with its unique interior design, attentive but not overbearing staff, excellent range of vodka and, most importantly sumptuous food. It has this ability to provide excellent food of the highest order, but at the same time make you feel that you are relaxing at home. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful and try and bring out the best from your time at the restaurant, whilst the range of food is mouth watering in itself, including classics such as borsch, aubergine caviar, salt salo and beef stroganoff. There are others of course, but these are so good that I find it hard not to choose them! So why 4 out of 5, not 5? For me it's just a little expensive to be considered exactly value for money but, don't feel that you will come away feeling cheated. You will, more likely, barely be able to rise from your seat given how much you will want to eat, and be utterly charmed by the restaurant and the experience!

You'll either gonna love this place (which we did) or feel like being in the wrong place in a bizarre parallel-universe … The place is just lovely in a completely over the top omg kind of way. A cramped living room style dinning room with the feel of someone's home (which is exactly what they are after). The food is not for the light and easy diner – after your meal you feel like rolling out of this place but well pampered with lovely attentative service.
