SquareMeal Review of The Mahogany Bar at Wilton’s Music Hall

The agreeably shambolic Mahogany Bar at Wilton’s has long been a popular spot with jobbing thespians, E1 trendsters, the occasional star (Liza Minnelli is a fan) and, yes, tourists. Well, you are drinking in the world’s oldest surviving music hall, little changed from the days when vaudeville’s Champagne Charlie was a regular. Order pints of Meantime and Black Isle, or choose wine with aperitivi (served gratis 6-8pm). Otherwise, the great McGonogall (a ginger and Scotch old fashioned) deserves star billing, while Fezziwig (Applewood smoked rye whiskey with chestnut liqueur) and D’Artagnan – a mellow, prune-infused Armagnac fellow – garner positive reviews. Poetry and song are occasionally performed in the rickety room, and productions in the music hall proper are a must-do. A new venture is the launch of the upstairs artistes’ Green Room as a cocktail bar (Wed-Sat evenings only).
