Stonehaven is a small coastal town, 15 miles south of Aberdeen. It has a resort feel, boasts an open-air swimming pool, & even a fish & chip shop said to be the home of the deep-fried Mars Bar. What casual visitors wouldn’t expect is a art deco restaurant – The Carron was originally built as shop units in the 1930s & has had various uses over the years until it was restored in the 1990s. A three-course dinner may start with robust crab soup with a touch of sherry, then oven-baked rock turbot with creme fraiche, toasted hazelnuts, & citrus butter for a main, & fruit clafoutis with an ambitious bay leaf ice-cream for pudding. There are also fillet & sirloin steaks, & specials such as local king scallops on salmon risotto. The environment is fetching & the cooking sound: a great overall package
