SquareMeal Review of Asadal

Bronze Award

Long before Korean food became a “funky” fixture of the London dining scene, Asadal was already spreading the gospel of kimchi – though you might easily walk right past its unassuming entrance hidden next to Holborn station. "Descend the steps and you could almost be in Seoul", notes one reader. The key to genuine Korean cooking is balance, and the extensive menu in this softly lit, wood-panelled basement dining room is “still delivering”, with bags of choice from savoury pa jeon (seafood pancakes) to sweet-and-sour tang su yook beef or spicy pork and beancurd hotpot. We’re also partial to hands-on favourites, including the sizzling bibimbap (layers of steak, vegetables and rice that you mix together in a stone pot) and the deftly marinated pork belly cooked barbecue-style on the hotplate at your table. Good-value lunch box deals are a great way to explore what's on offer. It may not be “cutting edge”, but Asadal’s food has “authenticity” in spades, concludes one convert.

Not worth it! Waste of money!

If possible I would have given zero stars. Food was’t that great and staff were downright racist. They simply denied a table initially and only gave table for 15 minutes, though there were no one waiting and plenty of tables empty! Never go there.. not worth it!
This restaurant simply ruined Korean image for me…..

My review

Asadal. What can I say about it. Well from my experience as a chef, I have been to many restaurants and shops. I proudly say that this was the most adequate place I’ve ever been to. The restraunt is clean and the staff are very genourous and very welcoming. I would definitely recommend others to come to this amazing restaurant.

Fraudulent, inauthentic and extremely rude.

Avoid at all costs. I’m saying this as a Korean British. I know how expensive food can get in London. Nevertheless, this place serves the worst Korean food ever. 1 person portion bulgogi(£9.5) is the size of my palm, the texture was stringy and tasteless. I’m convinced that the meat’s been in the freezer for a very long time. Bulgogi can’t taste bad. But Asadal proves it can.

A small sized stone bowl of Sullongtang(£10.50 + £2 for another tiny bowl of rice, which usually comes with the soup without extra charge) contained 4 slices of another bad quality meat in it, the broth is obviously not done right either, it lacked in depth of flavour(but it’s a beef bone broth). Never have I tasted such low-quality Sullongtang in my life. It’s too generous to call their dishes ‘overpriced’, they are tricksters. It gets even better with the quality of service. Never ever been treated like that in my life. The critiques of this restaurant aren’t exaggerated. This business is still up and running by ripping off non-Korean customers & tourists. During the meal, I complained to the owner’s wife and waiter but they really couldn’t care less. Lazy, unenthusiastic and grumpy as hell.

+ Ended up complaining again before asking for the bill cause I genuinely felt scammed and there’s no way I’d pay over £22 for such nonsense. This time, I asked if I can talk to the owner himself. Not only was he in denial the entire time, but he also interrogated me to find out where my father runs his business(are you freaking out of your mind?) after asking him to run a business with a conscience when I really had enough with his rudeness and irresponsible attitude.

I asked him to get rid of bulgogi in my bill but he insisted he wouldn’t and instead gave it a 50% off. Even that, he tried to trick me to charge a little bit more extra. What a joke. Heard you mumbling ‘don’t pay then’ as I walked out! I don’t care how shameless you are but you gotta stop mocking Korean food and close down already.

Ok food, shocking service.

We ordered the set meal.

Not only was there no explanation of the meal, but the grill went out repeatedly, and the waitress gave us no clue as to whether we should cook the meat ourselves or wait for her to appear when she felt like it.

The card machine failed to accept the (perfectly valid) Amex card of my friend. Far from being apologetic, the waiter was positively aggresssive until my friend produced an acceptable alternative, despite the fact that we’d made it clear that we would cover the difference.

We complained to the waiter, only to overhear a discussion amongst the staff to the effect that we’d paid the service charge so that it didn’t matter.

Our subsequent complaint to the manager was met with what amounted to blank incomprehension.

There are plenty of Korean restaurants in the Holborn/St Giles area that deserve your business. This place deserves to be put out of business

Still delivering
Appearances can be deceptive, so don’t be put off by the slightly incongruous location (pretty much next door to Holborn underground station) or grubby frontage. Descend the steps and you could almost be in Seoul. I first ate at Asadal over ten years ago and prior to a recent evening visit, not for some five or so. Despite the emergence of several newer and funkier Korean up-starts (such as Little Venice’s Gogi or the expanding Kimchee min-chain), Asadal continues to deliver. The restaurant itself is a large basement space, but tables are well-spaced and the mellow wood panelling lends a calm feel to the place. The menus themselves look as if they have perhaps seen better days and could perhaps do with a revamp, but what you come here for is the food. Based on the number of Koreans dining, many would clearly seem to agree. We began with a selection of kimchee (pickled vegetables – predominantly cabbage – with spice), followed this with two starters and concluded with two mains. There was little to fault any of our dishes. They arrived speedily, were presented well and delivered in terms of taste. A wide range is available here and so while I enjoyed a bibimbap (a stone bowl with beef slices, rice, vegetables and a raw egg), my comrade partook in some beef freshly fried in front of him. Cutting-edge this may not necessarily be, but what Asadal loses in this respect, it certainly gains in terms of authenticity. At c£30/head including beer and service, it is also a reasonably priced dining experience to enjoy.

I work in Lincoln's Inn Fields and often bemoan the lack of restaurants for lunch nearby. It's all chains like Strada and Cafe Rouge. Asadal is a real find for lunch or dinner and is excellent value. The food is really tasty (try the Kan Poong Gi Bab; marinated fried crispy chicken. Not fatty or covered in thick nasty batter, just really light and crispy. Amazing) and the lunch deal includes a bowl of miso soup and a slice of melon for dessert. Excellent value, particularly when most of the lunch dishes cost about £8. The Korean root tea is also really good – similar to ginger tea but with a slight hint of spice. The Korean barbecue menu for dinner is also excellent value and great dining theatre; the tables have a gas barbecue recessed in the table and after you've gorged on 3 rounds of starters a chef comes to your table with marinated meat/fish/similar, as well as lots of vegetables, sauces, rice etc and cooks it in front of you. Great fun and the smell of barbecuing food is really appetising. Service is prompt and discrete.

Do not come here. I used to love this place, recommended it to friends and even organised a work function here, but this place has become bad and is a dissappointment on all fronts: • the worst service you will find • salty food • lukewarm miso soup • overpriced menu • small portions No time to look at the menu. They cleared plates from around us, brang out a quarter of orange (meant for dessert) and gave us the bill – ALL WHILE WE WERE EATING!!. The next insult was they interrupted my partner while he was on the phone to tell us the restaurant was closed and we had to leave NOW. They gave no prior warning. We arrived for lunch at 2pm, and finished in 1 hour. The thing is, there are no signs to say opening hours on the door and when we arrived the waiter who seated us did not warn us that they were going to close or that it may be rushed at any point. This was the worst experience. Do not come here. You deserve to be treated better.
