SquareMeal Review of A Torre

The Antunes family has been running this Crystal Palace charmer since 2004. Out front, mother & father are joined by their son & daughter, while uncle Fernando is behind the stoves. Fresh fish dominates a menu that changes rarely, for fear of inciting rebellion among the many regulars. Grilled sardines, tuna & sea bass feature alongside cataplana (traditional seafood stew). Specials might include grilled octopus or crispy fried whitebait. Meat-eaters could choose steaks, spicy chicken, the classic pork & clams, or a monkfish cataplana beefed up with chorizo & cured ham. Furnishings are simple & tables tightly packed, but conviviality is enhanced by the inexpensive Portuguese wine list. Oldest son Hugo is due to take over in 2012 when his parents retire to Portugal, but don’t expect any drastic changes.

This is an amazing family restaurant

I have been going to A Torre for years and it's my restaurant of choice in Crystal Palace. You get Portuguese family cooking, a great choice of wines, lovely staff and the most delicious food for an average London restaurant price. Actually, the setting etc may not have the 'posh restaurant' feel of Joanna's or the Exhibition Rooms round the corner, but the food is as good if not better - and it's not something you can cook at home (unless you're Portuguese).

Someone has written something about getting similar food in Portugal for £10. Well, this isn't Portugal, it's London. And for London, this is great value.

If you like seafood, come here. They definitely serve the best crispy calamari in the Triangle. Trust me, my family have tried them all. And the Portuguese paella is the best paella I've ever had, packed with seafood, incredibly tasty.

Food doesn't get better than this.

Food that would be at best worth 9 to 10€ in Portugal… Being a Portuguese I am a big lover of food. Living away from Portugal for several years I always try to find a nice Portuguese restaurant wherever I go – Sometimes I get great memories through tastes and flavors, sometimes.. not so much. This restaurant looks good, clean, tidy which is a plus, but the food I had (Carne de Porco a Alentejana) is not the real Portuguese food. The meat was dry, the fried squares of potatoes were soft not crispy and the intense flavor so characteristic of this dish wasn't there.. I even had to add salt and still.. It is a shame but maybe they are not that good in Alentejo food since the owners are from the north of the country (?maybe thats why?)… Paying 15£ to eat average cooked food was a disappointment and definitely not worth it.
