SquareMeal Review of Phoenix Palace

Bronze Award

“Nothing changes, and that’s the point” at this flamboyantly decorated fixture of the local Chinese scene.  Consistency is the watchword, and super-efficient service ensures customers get the best of a huge, 300-dish menu. Dim sum is the star at lunchtimes and weekends, when Chinese families and the Regent’s Park crowd roll in for exemplary renditions of, say, crispy lobster dumplings, briny pork croquettes, prawn cheung fun and nourishing congees. Otherwise, the full line-up runs from breaded scallops with mango sauce or shredded smoked chicken to braised duck with mushrooms or quick-fried squid with morning glory in shrimp paste. The cavernous dining room operates in its own little world, complete with carved screens, tassels and flashing illuminated gewgaws – you could get lost, or lose your companions in here. Still, “if you love the place, it’s probably like coming home”.

Amazing food, perhaps the best Chinese in London. I go there regularly and have taken friends there. All of my friends enjoyed the food every time. Service can be abrupt.

Three recent visits have all been very good, an excellent Chinese restaurant if in a somewhat tricky place to get to and park.

Very consistent. Try their emperor prawn or crab. Real crowd pleaser. One to recommend

As a family tradition, the extended family of twenty members went to Phoenix Palace Restaurant for lunch on Boxing Day with great expectation. We were given a room, which was an encouraging start; so we thought. Alas, the dim-sum and the stir fried dishes were mediocre. Worst of all the service was rude and slow. Instead of serving us, the waiters practically ordered us about. It was clear that ‘thank you’ or ‘please’ is not in their vocabulary. To add insult to injury, they added 17.5% service charge to the bill! We paid without arguing, although we could have protested. It was after all Boxing Day and we were happy with the accommodation, where members of the family many coming from afar could chat cheerfully without having to worry about disturbing other customers. The visit to the PPR was our first and I am sure it will be our last too. There are better and more friendly Chinese restaurants nearby. A pity that we missed the photos of some disposed politicians displayed in the lobby area as we entered; they should have been a good enough warning for us.

Went there for a family dinner on Saturday (two reasons behind choosing this place was – Chinese and child-friendly). Had a very good meal – enjoyed through and through, even by my fussy-and-very-little-eating 8 y.o. son. For starters, Chrispy seaweed came in a generous portion and of very pleasant taste, and deep fried shredded squid was nicely done (I would prefer it more salty, but that's my individual salt-mad taste). Peking dumpling in soya chilli dressing were a bit bland to my taste, or may be required a different sauce, but Crab meat sweek corn soup was very very nice. For mains, King prawn with scrambled egg was perfect for the kid (succulent huge prawns in a delicious scrambled egg), Quick fried Squid with morning glory in shrimp paste was absolutely delicious, and Enoki Mushroom E-Fu Noodle was very nicely cooked and came in a huge portion (had to share between us too and took some home as well). For Saturday night dinner the place was packed full, but this did not affect the service which was very prompt and efficient, the toilets clean and decorated to a high standard, and the kid watched the fish in the aquarium and got a lovely paper dragon to play with. Will definitely be back.

This is one of my neighbourhood favourites. Even though the location is ‘whatever’, and the decor is dated, the food is always very good. It's always packed with large chinese groups and sometimes you'll have to wait for up to half hour for dim sum lunch on weekends, but it's worth it. Food is always good and my husband and I go at least once a week for a quick after work dinner, or a leisurely saturday lunch.
