About

Part of the five-star country house Lainston Hotel, The Avenue is a smart and elegant restaurant which is named after the mile-long avenue of lime trees that guests can see from the dining room.

The Avenue is a sophisticated space, but doesn’t feel overly pompous. Wood-panelled walls and heavy drapes speak to tradition, but touches such as the soft patterned carpet and cosy fireplace help to make things a little homey too. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, while a classic afternoon tea is also available.

Avenue’s menu is driven by seasonality, which means it changes every few months. Nonetheless, you can always expect a refined selection of carefully sourced seafood and meat dishes. From the selection of starters, you might find Chalkstream trout with beetroot, yuzu, horseradish and cucumber or perhaps celeriac topped with truffle and caramelised white chocolate.

Main courses might include the likes of roasted hake with butternut squas, seaweed and sea buckthorn; lamb loin and belly with smoked shoulder Shepherd's pie and mint; or cod loin with cauliflower, maitake, and a sake beurre blanc. To round off your meal, choose between a cheese board served with crackers and garden chutney, or sweeter options such as a mango souffle with tropical compote and pineapple sorbet or a
honey cake with poached pear, ginger, pear sorbet.

For special occasions when you are looking to treat yourself, opt for The Avenue’s six-course tasting menu, which represents a ‘greatest hits’ of the current menu. There are dedicated vegetarian and vegan tasting menus too, so that anyone at your table who doesn’t eat meat won’t feel left out.

On the weekends, head to The Avenue for a sumptuous Sunday lunch. This family-friendly affair sees classic roasts being served, with options to choose from including smoked pork belly and roast sirloin of beef. You can expect all of the usual trimmings such as Yorkshire pudding and beef fat potatoes, while veggie diners can order risotto with shitake mushrooms.

The Avenue is truely a very pretty place to have dinner and the food is remarkably well sourced and prepared. Lainston House itself and its grounds is one of the prettiest places to stay in and around Winchester. The wine list is incredibly well compiled and serivice is very good. Very good indeed.

Stepping back a few centuries often means a formal less relaxed experience. Nevertheless on arrival a good-looking building was a pleasure to behold and gorgeous gardens were enhanced by sun on bank holiday Monday. Even if the chef has had a strong foothold for almost quarter of a century, cooking is an obvious vocation of which he will perhaps never tire. He came up with a mix of accomplished classics, some made interestingly modern without a puff of foam in sight, which pleased our group, except for one under-seasoned starter. He did wonders with beetroot, featuring differently 3 times, and pork was the unanimously gratifying choice for main. Though service was blunder free, the staff on duty that day seemed a trifle inexperienced. Generally enjoyable, so we’d all return, especially for a bit of ‘Old Spot’ and a peek at the grounds.
