SquareMeal Review of The Restaurant at Thorpe Park Hotel & Spa

Showing good taste in both its decor and on its plate, Thorpe Park Hotel and Spa, has become a magnet for corporate diners in the fast-developing east Leeds business park. Take lunch in the Courtyard, a dramatic, glass-topped Parisian-style atrium that rises through two stories, with a mix of Mediterranean and Yorkshire dishes, typically spinach and ricotta crespelle with formaggio sauce or a slow-braised Nidderdale lamb with mash and onion gravy. For dinner, there's a grown-up dining room of leather and crisp linen and a towering floodlit wine rack. The menu again pits Italian against Yorkshire: mozzarella, artichoke and red pepper salad with basil pesto and Yorkshire calf’s liver and Wensleydale bacon. Pannacotta and tiramisu compete with treacle tart and Swaledale cheeses. It's pricey but principled, with intelligent local sourcing at its heart.

About

Thorpe Park Hotel and Spa has a lot to offer. The spa alone boasts a 13-metre swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, gym and treatment rooms. And, when it comes to dining, Thorpe Park delivers on all fronts. The dining room has a glass roof and high ceilings, making the space airy, relaxed and bathed in sunlight through the day. The various menus cover everything guests could possibly want, including breakfast, all-day dining, dinner, cocktails, al fresco options and afternoon tea.

At the start of the day, diners can choose from a huge range of breakfast options, including waffles, American-style pancakes, omelettes, eggs Benedict, Florentine or Royale, or a full ‘Northern Breakfast’. Lighter options such as granola and smoothies are also available, as are breakfast cocktails like mimosas and bloody Marys.

For those dining al fresco, there are classic dishes like beer-battered haddock with triple cooked chips, burgers, steak or Caesar salad, as well as soup of the day and cold sandwiches for a lighter bite.

In the evening, the offering is expectedly lavish. Starters include a simple French onion soup, chicken liver parfait with brioche or a warm Whitby crab cake, while mains offer venison Bourguignon for meat-eaters, blue cheese and leek soufflé for veggies and a pan-seared cod fillet for seafood enthusiasts. Diners can finish with a decadent dessert such as creme brulee or warm chocolate fondant with honeycomb and raspberry sorbet. However, given the location, it would be a shame to miss the selection of award-winning Yorkshire cheeses from Cryer and Stott Cheesemongers.

Afternoon tea is a must, and here includes a range of hearty sandwiches like smoked salmon and watercress or mature cheddar and chutney, as well as sweet treats such as spiced carrot cake and a sharp lemon meringue tartelette. To add a splash of booze, diners can upgrade their afternoon tea with Prosecco or Champagne.
