SquareMeal Review of Britannia Spice

The name and the interior are a tribute to the Royal Yacht Britannia which is moored in the Ocean Terminal at Leith docks – so expect lots of nautical trappings, ship’s wheels, sails, lanterns and staff dressed in smart white uniforms with braided epaulettes. It’s an unlikely setting for upmarket Indian food, but the kitchen makes its mark with a roster of dishes ranging from onion bhajis, samosas and tandoori lamb chops to chicken tikka masala, aloo gosht and vegetable biryani. Britannia Spice also shows its multi-ethnic side with ideas from elsewhere in the Far East – try the Nepalese momo dumplings or stir-fried beef with Thai spices and basil, as well as shorisha bata golda chingri (Bangladeshi king prawns cooked with mustard paste, green chillies and yoghurt). Well-chosen wines too.
