SquareMeal Review of Bistro at The Boathouse

Silver Award

In a “super location”, hard by the river in Henley, The Boathouse features an all-day decked area offering stunning vistas and the prospect of fine-weather carousing. Shaun Dickens is a veteran of top-end kitchens including  Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, so expect plenty of finesse and innovation here – although prices are very fair given the quality on offer. Readers confirm that the kitchen is “the best of the best” hereabouts, delivering food with a contemporary edge and lots of technical know-how – witness chicken liver parfait (“with the dreamiest texture”), sea bass with ‘hen of the woods’ mushrooms, orange, polenta and mizuna or braised pork neck (“cooked to perfection”) with a potato terrine, bright green broccoli purée, preserved lemon and a delicious meat jus. Desserts also show off Dickens’ fondness for fancy technique, as in a combo of strawberry, basil, chocolate streusel and meringue. Well-chosen wines “hit the spot”, too. “Perfect for a special occasion, or just because…” notes a fan.

Disappointing

The friendly welcome went well with the equally friendly set-up of the dining room and the front-of-house approach, and it was a shame that the restaurant was almost completely empty with just one other table in use on the evening. We opted for the larger tasting menu, and my wife was served an alternative to the oyster starter without any problem. The wine list was rather limited, temporarily we were told, and there was no English fizz. The canapés were good, a celeriac velouté with dehydrated onion crumbs and a smoky, crispy cod’s roe tart, and I would have enjoyed my oysters more if there had been less of the, for me, unnecessary chilli. My wife’s bland salmon, with compressed cucumber, pickled shallot and confit potato suffered from too much lemon peel, an influence which would have more welcome with the charred broccoli that followed. Things looked up again with the interesting balance of tastes and textures in the burrata salad with beetroots and horseradish and a good beetroot orzo, but this was followed by a cod dish that was rather below-par, the texture of the fish being rather dry and the seasoning very much overdone. The best thing on the menu was undoubtedly the tender, tasty duck, cooked to perfection; unfortunately the caraway and onion pastille that came with it was chewy and had a rather unpleasant filling, but there was some decent charred onion. Normally we would have had the cheese course, which was part of the menu, but the portions had been larger than we are used to, so we passed and went on to the palate cleanser/first dessert, soft, sweet compressed pineapple with interesting coconut cake, a touch of lime and pink peppercorn in the background. Our meal was completed in good style with blood orange sorbet, dark chocolate streusel and a delightfully light parfait. We had wanted to like this restaurant but unfortunately there were too many negatives for us.

Shaun Dickens cooking using fresh, local produce is absolutely superb and is supported by an impressive front of house team. Together they make an excellent team at a great location.

Flying the Culinary Flag for Henley
I can't believe I haven't already reviewed Shaun Dickens who offers the best of the best in Henley on Thames. We have eaten at this modern, riverside restaurant so many times, dined here with friends and family and it rarely disappoints. In fact, sometimes the dishes positively dazzle; fit for a top restaurant anywhere, however, we have occasionally had one or two misses. Yesterday evening, we ate, pre-Henley Festival, from their set menu. The place was buzzing and choice of 3 starters and 3 mains naturally didn't require much deliberation. We both selected chicken liver parfait followed by braised pork. Both were utterly delicious. The parfait was the dreamiest texture contrasted with crunchy celery, semi-soft (perhaps marinated) red onion slivers. One may consider this dish to be a little passe but evidently in the right hands and with all the right accompaniments, it can be excellent and this was. Braised pork neck was cooked to perfection with a potato terrine, bright green puree, broccoli, preserved lemon and a delicious meat jus. Some seasonal staff were being guided by the more experienced during this busy service and everything ticked along very well. The wine selection has grown since first opening and this time by asking the sommelier about the ones we had shortlisted, he recommended a Romanian Syrah which was reasonably priced and delivered a full-fruited, peppery number that 'hit the spot' rather nicely. So much care and attention is applied to food preparation which puts SD firmly on the food map, and I cannot ever imagine front of house being neglected either. We completed with a selection of British cheeses and a slightly less sweet chutney which I would favour over most and which perfectly complemented the generous selection of cheeses. What a great start to our evening.
