SquareMeal Review of San Carlo Cicchetti Covent Garden

Bronze Award

This glamorous mini-chain of old-school Italians has satisfied hungry Londoners for years. The San Carlo group is known for delivering casual but effortlessly elegant all-day dining with great panache. The interiors are shiny with lots of gold and marble, the service is effortlessly charming and there’s little chance of leaving hungry – this place is Italian to the core. Seasonally changing menus feature a run of sharing plates: start with a creamy helping of buratta, served with parma ham and sprinkled with shavings of earthy truffle, before moving on to larger plates including intensely meaty Paccheri pasta stuffed with Tuscan pork sausage, and veal wrapped in parma ham. Continue the fun with a glass of Prosecco or an Aperol spritz, before choosing from the likes of tiramisu and panna cotta from the dessert menu, or if you can’t decide, opt for the dessert tray which serves you a little bit of everything.

Booked this restaurant as San Carlo is one of my favourite Italian restaurants however this one is small plates only, which was also fine as we're not massive eaters. Food was delicious however my husband and daughter had eaten their food by the time my own came out! We tried to catch the Maitre d to ask where the meal was and it was still quite a while before I got it. It was lasagne & delicious. Realising I would like some garlic bread to go with it I ordered a portion however, it arrived after I'd finished my meal ?? aside from the speed of food coming out I would recommend.

Astonishingly poor service

We had asked on this site and again in a confirmatory phone call for a quiet table. On arrival the manager (?) was dismissive of this request, and our table was noisy .... difficult as two of our party of four are hard of hearing. The food was imaginative and tasty although the portions were small even for a tapas-type experience. But after the initial ordering process we were more-or-less ignored. We had to ask for the correct cutlery, for more water (twice), for the dessert menu, for our choice from the dessert menu, and finally it was very difficult to obtain the bill. We deducted most of the included 12.5% service charge and were rewarded with stony stares and grim faces as we left. Never to return - it was a great disappointment.

Have visited this restaurant and the Cicchetti in Piccadilly on trips to London. Lovely atmosphere, delightful staff especially manager Nicolas, brilliant food. Strongly recommend.

Another San Carlo Cicchetti to add to the illustrious list.
Another San Carlo Cicchetti and this one near Aldwych, the Opera House and many West End theatres so perfect for a pre show meal or a libation or snack post the show. It amazes me how the food and service remain at such a high level across all the San Carlo restaurants and this new one is no exception. They are certainly doing something right. It doesn't yet have the queue leading out the door that you see at Cicchetti Piccadilly but give it time as, once more and more people are aware of its existence, the Wellington Street restaurant will no doubt see similar activity. The food is superb but if I had to recommend one dish, it would be the ravioli with pecorino and truffles.
