SquareMeal Review of Freud - Oxford

The Jericho district is all about quirky style, and its bars don’t come much more off-the-wall than this 19th-century, neo-classical Greek Revival church. Weather-beaten stone columns give way to a cavernous interior of floor-to-ceiling banners, tea-lit tables and an elongated bronze bar, where cheeky staff mix generously priced cocktails for a varied crowd of after-dinner drinkers and post-pub students. Classics are well represented, with dry martinis, Manhattans, white Russians and negronis all under £5, while more creative mixes might include Holy Freud lemonade (lychee, cranberry and elderflower), creamy ‘apple pie’ martini and three spins on iced tea – Boris, New York and New England. Service can be patchy, so buy big rounds or snack on home-baked pizzas while you wait. Related to the legendary Freud bar on London’s Shaftesbury Avenue.
