SquareMeal Review of China Tang at The Dorchester Hotel

Basement dining rooms must work hard to get noticed, and China Tang works harder than most in that department: down in the lower regions of The Dorchester, no inch of the restaurant goes unembellished. The inspiration is interbellum Shanghai, and while the dark wood and elaborate carpets aren’t looking box-fresh, it’s certainly an atmospheric way to kit out a dining space. China Tang’s food is straight-down-the-middle Cantonese, handled with care and served with a level of ceremony that suits the luxe hotel surroundings. To start, try delicate tomato and egg-drop soup, followed by golden prawns with salted egg yolk, stir-fried minced seafood in lettuce wraps or, for a bit of fire and fragrance, fish braised with Szechuan peppercorns. Tang’s international clientele believe there’s no bad time for dim sum, so expect sui long bao, mango rolls, spring onion cakes and cha siu bao right through the day. In the bar, the same menus are offered, along with fashion-forward cocktails.

About

China Tang at The Dorchester Hotel is one of London's most recognisable Chinese restaurants, thanks to its iconic, opulent art deco dining room, and a huge menu of sumptuous Cantonese cooking.

The huge basement dining room is inspired by pre-war Shanghai, and every inch of the room is embellished with elaborately-patterned carpets and floral upholstered seating. The walls are all dark wood, detailed with intricate carvings and illuminated by low-lit lamps, which cast moody shadows across the room.

China Tang’s menus feature a bevy of authentic Cantonese dishes - fear not if you're overwhelmed by the choice, because China Tang also offers set menus for groups. To start, try delicate tomato and egg-drop soup, barbecue honey spare ribs, or roast duck. There are platters of Cantonese roast meats, and then a host of classic dishes like lobster noodles and scallops with black bean, as well as more unusual dishes such as braised abalone with sea cucumber. As well as the a la carte, China Tang also offers vegetarian and halal menus too. The vegetarian menu is extensive, with dishes like golden crispy tofu, aubergine hotpot, and morning glory in garlic sauce making this a great restaurant choice for vegetarians.

Dim sum is another big part of China Tang's success. The dim sum menu is split into specials, meat, seafood and vegetarian items, with a range of traditional and luxury treats in each section. Dim sum is available at lunch and dinner, and includes the likes of Dover sole crab rolls with caviar, Iberico pork siu long bao, scallop dumplings, sesame prawn toast, and spring onion cakes.

In the bar, the same menus are offered, along with fashion-forward cocktails like the Plum Cobbler (plum liqueur, peppermint and eucalyptus cordial, violet, Hennessy XO, pandan syrup, fresh pear, citrus) and the Sea Spritz (Seatrus Gin Acqua Di Mare, homemade cedro soda).

Best Beijing Duck in the country and excellent value for two to four people with a few side dishes added.

Clever creativeness with ingredients from the restaurant's own garden and local suppliers, an exemplary Coravin wine flight, and unfussy ambience.

Excellent food let down by mental service
Saturday night dinner at China Tang. Beautiful dim sum to start followed by stunning salt and pepper squid and prawns. Our rice didn't arrive. Our drinks order was lost 3 times. The mango cheesecake was fantastic. Don't bother with the chocolate dumplings for dessert. You get 4 tiny dumplings so small they all fit on one dessert spoon and are gone in one mouthful and £7 for the privilege! Shame such lovely food was let down by the very strange and patchy service.

Launch Meal
I came to China Tang on Monday 8th April, i arrived with some freinds to celebrate my new clothing company thats being launched. All i have to say is that we were treated like royalty, the food was full of taste and cooked to perfection, the staff when we entered the restaurent in the basement area were very helpful and polite, and all stood with pretty smiles on their faces. The cocktails we had before our meal were (no word fo a lie) the best in London. I highly recommend this place the bar's atmosphere is wonderful, the decor is stunning. The place is one of the places to be in London.

Very Disappointed
I visited China Tang on Saturday 23rd Feb for birthday dinner. On arrival we were shown to possibly the worst table despite the place being nearly empty. It took very long to place an order as the waiting staff were disorganised and simply nowhere around. The waitress was very unprofessional and distracted. Upon ordering we were told that food will arive as it's ready and not at the same time which was shocking considering the ''acclaimed high standard of the restaurant''. In fact all dishes arrived at different times. Half of the food got cold before one of our main courses arrived 45 minutes late. The staff admitted they got it wrong, meaning they forgot to cook it. The manager was apologetic and did not charge us for 2 dishes. One of the main courses was chicken with cashew nuts which should be instead called cashews with minute amounts of chicken in it. The amount of cashews in this dish was extraordinary large and we were struggling to actually find the chicken pieces which were cut to a size of green peas. I've never experienced similar oddiness. I'm used to dining in the best restaurants in London and can confidently say China Tang does not fit into fine dining category by any means. I will never return there and do not recommend it.

Amazing place. The food is a little over priced, so I wouldn't eat here everyday but when you do, you're in for a treat. Staff are polite and very helpful. I would recommend this place to anyone.

While the food is good it is overpriced and you get either same quality a lot cheaper somewhere else or even better quality. It is stylish but feels a bit soulless and stiff
