SquareMeal Review of London Steakhouse Co. Chelsea

Bronze Award

Hugely popular with a “distinctly middle-aged crowd” who probably equate smartly dressed waiters with quality dining, this buzzing King’s Road branch of Marco Pierre White’s London Steakhouse Co. continues to delivers on its promise. The gleaming, glammed-up backdrop of chandeliers and art-deco flourishes creates a “delightful atmosphere”, while the food veers towards “classic and timeless” – in other words satisfying rather than wildly imaginative. Top-quality, expertly timed steaks are the stars of the show, from an 8oz rump to a massive 24oz Boston chop, with triple-cooked chips and a choice of sauces (perhaps béarnaise or Café de Paris). Familiar starters might bring potted shrimps or spiced pears with goats’ cheese fondant, while “outstanding” cheesecake and Cambridge burnt cream are perennial favourites from the calorific dessert list. “Spot-on” service aims to please, and there are attractive set deals (including a kids’ menu).

Great restaurant
Some things were classic and timeless, one or two little touches were crass. The food was, in the main outstanding. Needless to say the steak was excellent, and the dessert (I had Cambridge Burnt Cream and my guest had Cheesecake) was outstanding. I was delighted by the gesture recognising my guest's birthday - a really nice touch. I was mightily disappointed by the bread basket. I really did not expect three slices of what looked like (and tasted like) bread from a plastic wrapper. I think a decent restaurant ought to be able to come up with something much more exciting than that, especially considering the cost. The service was spot on, not intrusive but appropriately attentive. It was a shame that the loos stank... I really do think they ought to be able to maintain them to a higher standard. But I recognise that I am beginning to get to the margins of a review here. Overall I had a delightful experience. Partly because of the food and drink, but more because of the atmosphere of the place with my guest.
