SquareMeal Review of The Palm Court at The Langham

Bronze Award

Built in 1927, The Palm Court is a dazzling Grade II-listed art deco vision of palatial proportions. For its commendable afternoon and high teas, and fine drinks, this arresting space should be a destination for discerning London bar hounds – as well as wealthy tourists and guests frequenting the hotel’s glorious ballroom.

At this level, cocktails are fair value at £12 for Sazerac and Patrón Silver Margarita, or £14 for deco delights such as The Astor (a Cognac, maraschino and absinthe Sour).

Appealing too, are jerk chicken, rice and peas; or seared mackerel and gado gado salad – at not much above pub prices. But given the location’s potentially fabulous good looks, the makeover is a missed opportunity.

About

When it comes to afternoon tea in the capital, few places have more experience than The Langham. In fact, the much adored hotel has been serving this time-honoured British tradition since it first swung open its doors way back in 1865. These days, tea is served in The Palm Court, a glamourous, over-the-top space featuring metallic wallpaper, cosy velvet tub chairs and mirrored columns which bounce light around the room.

The Palm Court’s menu is designed by legendary chef Michel Roux Jr and The Langham’s executive pastry chef Andrew Gravett, in an offering which celebrates all things British and takes inspiration from our nation’s favourite biscuits and baked tarts. The afternoon tea begins with a selection of traditional finger sandwiches, with varieties to try including Cornish Burford Brown eggs, black truffle on pain de mie or classic cucumber, cream cheese and chives on white bread. Next up, tuck into your choice of plain or raisin studded scones which arrive fresh from the Palm Court bakery and are paired with Cornish clotted cream and seasonal preserves. The grand finale sees an assortment of sweet treats which are inspired by classic British biscuits and baked tarts, so expect to see reimaginings of Custard Creams, bread and butter pudding, and tiffin.

A children’s afternoon tea is also available which includes plenty to keep little ones happy, such as sandwiches in the shape of jigsaw puzzle pieces and a selection of sweet treats like s'mores or chocolate brownie and fondue. A vegetarian version of the tea is also available, while there is also the option to add a glass of fizz if you are celebrating.

In the evening, Palm Court transforms into a Caribbean oasis, serving everything from jerk chicken to curried goat, with plenty of cocktails to enjoy alongside.
