SquareMeal Review of Plateau Bar & Grill

Bronze Award

Plateau is the sort of slick contemporary proposition that could be in Toronto, Seoul, Frankfurt – or any other concrete and glass financial hub. Needless to say, suit-wearers predominate. But enter this fourth-floor restaurant’s curiously named ‘leather bar’ and you might encounter Forbidden Fruit and Jeux d’Amour: two from a varied and creative list of cocktails (from £9) that incorporates the classics as well as ‘signature serves’. Other sexy calls we like making here include Temptation (a vanilla-infused Ketel One and orgéat fruity cooler), and Estupendo (a Tequila, peach and cinnamon sour). Snacks have a Eurasian bent, with the likes of Korean-style wings or chilli-spiced rice balls vying for attention with cod pancakes, croque monsieur-ettes, and feta, tomato and olive parcels. The terrace is the place to sample the impressive cigar selection.

About

Found a the very top of Canada Place, opposite One Canada Square Tower, Plateau in Canary Wharf offers the types of views often only associated with our friends across the pond in New York. Here you’ll be treated to a birds-eye view of the iconic architecture of The Financial District, in all its sky-scraping glory.

The main dining room is cosy in colder months, without losing any of its signature draw thanks to floor to ceiling windows. Come warmer weather the outdoor heated and covered terrace makes the perfect place to soak up the buzzy atmosphere, offering the same menu as the restaurant.

The bar menu complements the food options perfectly, with a huge range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. Mocktails include the enticing Seedlip spiced perfect serve, made with Seedlip spiced alcohol-free spirit, ginger ale, star anise and lemon. If mocktails don't take your fancy, there is also a range of teas and soft drinks available.

Cocktails include classics like Negronis, espresso martinis and old fashioned, as well as twists like a sage and apricot martini or peanut butter old fashioned. There is a truly enormous list of spirits on offer, with whiskies from both the highlands and lowlands, alongside rums from all over the Caribbean and Central America.

For those not dining, there is a punchy selection of bar snacks available from 5 pm. This includes the obligatory Gordal olives, salted almond and bread selection, along with more substantial options like crispy salt and pepper squid with sweet chilli sauce, Cajun spiced chicken fillets with Sriracha mayo or a charcuterie platter with cornichons and a fresh baguette.

The bar menu wine list primarily covers France and Italy, while the sparkling options range from Chandon all the way up to vintage Dom Pérignon Rosé Brut. For any occasion, the bar menu covers drinks and snacks on all fronts.

Livley and loud!
A very stylish venue in Canary Wharf with immaculately turned out and very friendly, smiley and professional staff, attentive but not intrusive. The place has a busy and very buzzy atmosphere. Maybe I'm getting a bit old but while the music was great it was a tiny bit too loud meaning any conversations were borderline shouting matches! The food was delicious, perfectly cooked and very well presented and by London prices an absolute bargain, £22.50 for 3 courses and a glass of wine from the Grill set menu.

Plateau Bar
Great views out over Canada Square to the ice rink below made this a memorable date. Watch out on the drinks they serve them American style with the glass brim full of ice which totally drowned my Gin & Tonic. Good choices on the Square Neal ‘special’ menu. Food quality and presentation was great except for the Bakewell Tart (their special of the evening) which ‘dehydrated’. Great background music. I would eat here again.

A schoolnight treat
Met up with the Mrs to enjoy one of Canary Wharf's free summer evening concerts & a light bite after. A convenient lift delivers you to the Bar & Grill at the Plateau, met with a smile, a drink at the bar or straight to the table. Simple but tastefull applies to the decor & to the menu. Excellent service, attentive & friendly, but without trying to become our new “best mate”. Making the most of the Evening Standard offer, the dishes vary but all we tried were straighforward, tasty, arrived hot (where appropriate), without much delay & were good sized portions. So nice not to have our conversation interupted by a waiter, indifferent to the answer, but needing to ask “how is your food ?” A simple, unpretentious & tasty 3 course meal – with a glass of wine for under £25. Just right for a midweek treat; we'll be back.

Great place
Perfect for a catch up lunch with friends. We ate in the Grill Bar. Food was well presented and hot, not lukewarm. Very attentive staff without being pretentious. I have eaten here a few times and enjoyed it every time.
