SquareMeal Review of The Sandy Park Inn

There’s no doubt that this 17th-century thatched inn is run with a breezy conviviality. It is old-fashioned hospitality at its most appealing, backed up by low beams, a big open fire, real ales, & some of England’s most spectacular scenery on the doorstep. Blackboard menus are displayed above the fireplaces & the food is pitched exactly right for the rustic surroundings. Sandwiches are available at lunchtime. Despite its rural location, the inn can get packed, so it is best to arrive early.

This pub has changed hands a number of times over the years but is still one of the best for value in the area. Lunchtime is often quite quiet with just a few ramblers and locals there for a beer and a sandwich. In the evenings it can be packed. The young couple who have taken over the pub are friendly, efficient and welcoming. The young chef is eager to please and keeps the menu simple. Beer battered cod on Fridays, sausage and mash, excellent risotto are the basics. The wine list is fairly priced as are the beers. They have rooms upstairs and a separate dining room but most locals prefer to eat in the bar next to the fire. I rate this above average for a small local pub.
