SquareMeal Review of London Wall Bar & Kitchen

You may find yourself traipsing up and down London Wall before you realise that this Benugo-owned eatery is up on a walkway – but it’s well worth persevering. Located right by the entrance to the Museum of London, there’s a lot to like about this cool, contemporary spot (“great atmosphere”, says one satisfied customer). Starters are limited to charcuterie boards loaded with the likes of fennel salami, bresaola and coppa, but mains take in fish and chips, mac ‘n’ three-cheese bake, and a gussied-up burger involving rib of beef and bone marrow. After that, desserts such as chocolate fudge cake or apple crumble with clotted cream are suitably indulgent. There’s coffee and cake for post-museum snackers, as well as a first-class wine list and some premium spirits too. Staff are reckoned to be “very friendly”.

I met a friend for a quick lunch in the City and we were not really in the mood for a full on restaurant nor a pret sandwich so we opted for this place as it was conveniently located and a bit different from the other City haunts. We were pleasantly surprised. The service was quick and efficient and the menu offered various choices. We asked to share two sandwiches (they all come with a choice of fries or coleslow). The lamb kofta wrap was a very pleasant surprise, the meat was moist and pinkish, the hummus and sauce was flavorsome. The crispy pork belly sandwich was crispy and sweet and quite big. The fries were tasty and crisp and really for a tenner each we couldn't have complained at all. Sadly i was too stuffed for dessert but I may try one next time. This is a good alternative if you don't want to eat in the pub but equally fancy something (nice) middle of the road.

Open only 5 weeks, we decided to try London Wall on a whim last Sat night. We figured as it was new and in a more difficult to find location we would be able to get in. We were right. It was fairly empty but I do think over time it will fill up as it's a very romantic spot. It still has teething troubles though. The food is OK rather than great but with just a bit more love could be marvelous. The service was willing, but again, with a bit more love or maybe training could be great. There did not seem to be any management in charge so the place seemed to drift. And the music… IT WAS AWFUL! The choice of music did not match the room and the sound system did not seem to work. But the rooms are lovely, the wine list great with an emphasis on Cote du Rhones and the menu enticing (although could have a different evening menu). With some management attention this place could a winner.
