Famed for its ancient castle, majestic river gorge and mighty viaduct, Knaresborough is also home to Carriages – a wonky Grade-II listed building sitting directly above a railway tunnel (don’t be put off by the sound of trains beneath your feet). Around £6 will buy you a plate of tapas at the bar – perhaps grilled asparagus with manchego shavings, char-grilled squid with black rice and bagna cauda or boneless confit duck with poached pear and almonds. Otherwise, you can enjoy more substantial (and more ambitious) food in the adjoining dining room, where the menu runs from goats’ cheese pannacotta with sun-dried tomato dressing and peach salsa to a trio of lamb with potato and beetroot fondant, parsnip crisp and blackberry jus. Steaks are a plainer option, while desserts might include steamed syrup sponge or raspberry and mint crème brûlée.
