SquareMeal Review of Zima Russian Restaurant

Bronze Award

Spread across a three-storey Soho townhouse, Zima aims to raise the profile of Russian food in London, offering traditional dishes with modern twists. It also claims to have the best-priced caviar in the capital, offering the luxury sturgeon eggs with the traditional accompaniments of blinis and sour cream.

The exteriors might be conventionally monochrome, but once you’re inside you’ll find a series of pretty dining rooms, which are decked out with cosy banquette seating, chequered flooring, Russian artwork lining the walls and a standalone bar. It’s a bright and attractive space, with several areas to choose between to sit down for drinks and food.

Zima’s menu traverses various Russian regions, offering up novel takes on classic dishes from the vast country. To start, you might enjoy the likes of an Olivier salad with chicken sand salmon roe, or borscht with sour cream. Come mains, try dishes such as beef stroganoff or perhaps pelmeni dumplings with three types of fish and squid ink, while desserts see the tempting likes of honey cake, and cottage cheese pancakes.

Prices at Zima are fair considering the surrounding area and the sophisticated surroundings, while a Euro-leaning wine list and a strong selection of Russian vodkas make for satisfying accompaniments to your meal. In fact, Zima serves homemade infused vodka on its menu, and the restaurant also runs its own Zima Picklery, where seasonal vegetables, fruit and drinks are all fermented on-site.

If you’re not stopping by for dinner, you can try Zima’s Russian afternoon tea instead. It is served daily and includes unlimited tea, as well as traditional Russian pastries, such as pirozhki baked buns, blinis with homemade jam and condensed milk, and a classic medovik honey cake. At lunchtime, there is a selection of four-course set menus available, while you can also expect occasional live entertainment in the restaurant too.

About

Russian cuisine isn’t as widely represented in London as some others, but Zima delivers traditional Russian cooking with a contemporary twist, delivering classic dishes like borsch, stroganoff and pelmeni, alongside an extensive vodka selection and house cocktails.

Situated on Frith Street in the heart of Soho, Zima inhabits a beautiful old Soho townhouse and couldn’t be easier to get to from anywhere in London. The interiors are clean, modern and colourful, with bistro-style wooden chairs and plenty of light streaming in through street-side windows. This is also a place to admire fine Russian art, from folk art all the way through to contemporary and avant-garde pieces.

Your Russian culinary experience starts with caviar - some of the best and most affordable in London - and follows that up with pickles and ferments, all made in-house in the Zima picklery. The menu features classic dishes like beef, cabbage and horseradish borsch, beef stroganoff with buckwheat and fried baby potatoes, herring fillets with boiled potatoes, Russian salad with chicken and salmon roe, and pelmeni lamb dumplings with yoghurt garlic sauce. There’s plenty more to explore besides, including bakery items like pirozhki (a small baked bun with filling) made in-house everyday, and desserts like honey cake, apple pie with vanilla ice cream, and cottage cheese pancakes with sour cream and raspberry sauce.

The drinks menu features a compact wine list, with special attention given to wines from Georgia, and a selection of innovative house mixes, including the Trans-Siberian Express (vodka, sea buckthorn puree, orange juice and rosemary) and the Zima Royale (raspberry nastoyka, Chambord, vanilla, lemon, Champagne). Zima also boasts a karaoke lounge, where you can enjoy snacks, vodka platters and cocktails whilst you belt out your favourite tunes.

Cozy place with tasty food

My favourite Russian food place in London. There is a great variety of vodka infusions - def a must-try, especially cherry and sea buckthorn ones. Also, definitely coming back for the rum balls.
