SquareMeal Review of Gaucho Canary Wharf

Bronze Award

"Summertime fun" is guaranteed at this branch of the Gaucho chain, especially when its alfresco waterfront space is rocking. In the less clement seasons, step inside, sit back in a cowhide chair and peruse the South American wine list with its multitude of hearty Malbecs and subtler Torrontes whites (many offered by the carafe). As for the food, "an Argentinian restaurant that can't do good steak is like the Shard's window cleaners not liking heights", so allow the well-informed waiters to explain the various cuts available. Lomo (fillet) and ancho (rib-eye) are popular, although we like the added flavour of spiral-cut churrasco, marinated in garlic, parsley and olive oil. Portions are ginormous, so don't overdo the starters, however tempting the tuna ceviche or tostadas might be. Some diners get as far as the dulce de leche cheesecake before admitting defeat – don't say we didn't warn you.

About

Gaucho Canary Wharf is spectacularly situated within the financial district on the banks of the river Thames. Gaze out at the panoramic view from the pretty terrace or cosy up inside, with its sleek continental interiors, the lights of the city brightening the horizon at night. Watch the boats go by as you sit up top amongst the cowhides.

Enjoy a business lunch or a DJ hosted “Electric brunch”, whatever the occasion Gaucho has got something impressive up its sleeve. Come for a casual weekend dinner or host a formal steak affair, entertain friends with cocktails at the bar, or dine alfresco with a stunning view. The open kitchen is a real treat, where you can watch as the chefs expertly create a dish worthy of being Argentinian.

The menu is just as impressive as the view and location, if not more. There are several menus to choose from, depending on the mood and occasion. From canapes to festive menus, there’s even a children’s menu. The signature menu features all the Argentinian restaurant classics. For starters do try the beef empanadas or a zingy tuna ceviche with avocado mousse. The mains feature marbled Ancho Ribeye, tender Lomo, and succulent Sirloin with a strip of juicy crackling. For desserts, Dulce de leche reigns supreme with the cheese cakes and sticky toffee puddings.

Nearby you’ll find great links to the rest of London and whole host of sights and activities for a pre-steak adventure to work up an appetite. Otherwise take it all in, enjoy the views and relax with a group of friends, colleagues, or family at this superb restaurant. A premium docklands location, within close proximity to Canary Wharf and Heron Quays, Gaucho is perfect for the suits looking for a great dining experience with a delicious steak after work.

First Class Service and excellent food. Very attentive staff, without being intrusive. Highly recommended.

Meat, for meatetarians. I would happily live this in place! The waiting staff know their cuts of meat inside out, always ready to fill your wine glass, the decor is amazing, i've taken many a tip from their cowhide for my own house. Yes, it's expensive, but the quality is second to non that I am happy to pay for. .

Yum Yum Cows Bum
An Argentinian restaurant that can't do a good steak is like The Shard's window cleaners not liking heights. At the Gaucho Grill the steaks come in a handful of cuts and they really do use the best Argentinian beef Gaucho's never disappoints. My piece of grilled cow bum was as always, beautiful. The chips were also fabulous, as was the chimichurri. The wine list was great, good Argentinian wines; many of which can be bought in half bottle carafes. I will go again.

Who doenst love Gaucho?? Always an experience, even if you have been there a hundred times, you always want to see the meat board with all the different cuts of beef! Everything is always so delicious and I have to say that once I actually even managed to have a 3-course meal there (what a pig!) Food is delicious, (especially the cheesy bread – always ask for more!) service is impeccable and the venue has a trendy, moody dark vibe that I love! Gaucho Canary over and above the others has a fantastic waterside location, where you can sit outside and enjoy the views and it is never too quiet. Brilliant place for a good steak and red wine or just a cocktail by the water.

We arrived very early for our table but was made to feel this was no problem at all & were seated at a great table. The interior is great, very black, lit by chandeliers..with plenty of cowhide coverings, it just looks like a great place to want to eat. I can't praise our waitress enough, she was superb. She bought to our table a large board with all the cuts of the beef on & explained how each was served & made it feel personal to your liking of steak. We decided on a cut to share & I can honestly say I have never had a steak with so much flavour before. It was It was coated with a mouth watering “Chimmichura” which had a fabulous, salty, slightly spicy taste. We had ordered sides, but we agreed the taste of the steak was so amazing these are so not necessary…a simple salad would be all you need to accompany it. As we had ordered champagne, the waitress made it her business to ask if we celebrating, which in turn led to a “Happy Birthday” plate being served at the end of our meal, containing the most amazing coffee tart, ice cream & candle. What a great touch! By the time we left the whole restaurant & bar was buzzing. There was even cocktail lessons going on at the other end of the bar. The whole feel of the place was delightful, and as we left & the sun was setting over the Thames, a huge liner was making it's way past. We will definately be returning & would recommend this place to anybody with a love for steak.

Previous reviews a bit harsh… Mind you they are old ones…perhaps they have new chefs now !…Gauchos…it;s a chain ..We ALL know about them …so when I read a complaints re the prices…?? One knows what one is going to Gaucho's for and the price..?…So why the shock ?…,,,,A steak is going to be £20 minimum …No..it's not Goodmans or The Palm …but you go there knowing what you are going to get ?… This one is local to me… Bar area is ok… ( better in summer when you can sit outside)…Service is always ok…and always polite..It's like a ‘no brainer’ …I want a steak now…ahhh Gaucho !! …It maybe one of many…but from what I see at the Wharf it's doing very well still…No…I dont go there that regularly …but its always OK when I do…It's like other restaurants…sometime things go wrong..When I have had a steak there that has not been cooked to satifaction…they have done me another one …They have their usual wine list which yes…it's a bit over priced …but good enough… Don't really know what more to add…Gaucho..it does what it says on the tin !

Absolute rip off! We had lunch there yesterday in a party of 8, were forced to choose a set menu at £55 per head, without drinks. The starter was bland, cold rubbish and the steak was mediocre at best. All Bar One would have been better! This is a chain restaurant trying to be a fine dinning establishment. Avoid at all cost! The bill came to over £800 for an hour and half of rubbish! You have Royal China, Roka, Plateau, Four Seasons all on the door step, this place is simply living off the name and the location of the restaurant. I cannot advise you strongly enough to avoid it!

Apologies I mistakenly posted this for their City location I can not warn people strongly enough to avoid this awful rip off place! I'm sure the Saturday evening (10/07/2010) I went they did not have a chef the open kitchen looked chaotic and grubby I had the Pan fried squid as a starter it resembled a very small packet of hula hoops with a disgusting industrial tomato sauce on top the only culinary contribution to this dish was some freshly chopped herb put on top I’m sure this was some sort of mass produced catering pack of reconstituted squid I have never seen squid with uniformed tentacles? My main course was sirloin steak which was OK if it had cost half as much, everything else was extra there was 6 of us dishes arrived in a confused order The mushrooms only appeared after several “where are they” requests The chips were over cooked and again I believe shipped in. The service was just as awful we seemed to have a Polish Dominatrix as a waitress who had a massive superiority complex and spent most of her time sneering at us The wine was OK but again I would say 15-20% over priced. Needless to say we did not have puddings or more wine and even then the bill was more than £75 PP that did include a cocktail each which was the best thing about the evening, I thought that these type of rip off places had all gone out of business and we were in an era of real food and good service but I am obviously very wrong The intent must be to build up the turnover of this chain and then IPO on AIM and walk off with a fortune because they are not interested in food
